The Land of High Passes ‘Ladakh’ is known for its rugged landscape, barren or snow capped mountains, mesmerizing lakes, picture perfect gompas, flourishing prayer flags, high mountain passes. It’s a beautiful high altitude plateau and the highest inhabited region in India, located between the Karakoram mountain range and the Himalayas. There are two motorable routes to Leh crossing over high mountain passes, Srinagar – Leh highway is 434 Kms and Manali – Leh highway is 474 Kms and both of these are closed during winters due to heavy snowfall. There are many fair and festivals which gives an insight on centuries-old culture, traditions and folk heritage, Hemis, Alchi, Lamayuru, Shey and Thiksay are some of the most popular monasteries of Ladakh. The main Bazaar and the surrounding streets have numerous shops selling Tibetan antiques, jewelry, handcrafted carpets, rugs and pashmina shawls. The main city Leh further heads to the cold desert of Nubra Valley and crystal blue water of Pangong Tso.
Leh is the main city in Ladakh located in the Indus river valley and is the center of Tibeto-Buddhist culture. Leh is small enough to walk most places with colourful gompas, Stpas, whitewashed houses and a number of monasteries. There are two roads in to Leh, one from Manali in Himachal Pradesh and one from Srinagar. Both routes are equally spectacular narrow roads, high mountains and numerous checkpoints. The main Bazaar and the surrounding streets have numerous shops selling Tibetan antiques, jewellery, handcrafted carpets, rugs and pashmina shawls.
Khardungla Pass is located at an elevation of 18,379 ft about 39 km by road from Leh, and is one of the world’s highest motorable road and serves as gateway to Shyok and Nubra valleys in the Ladakh region.
Nubra Valley also reffered as valley of flowers is situated in the north of Ladakh at the base of the Karakorum Range. The capital of Nubra is Diskit which is about 150 km north from Leh town. This valley is famous for 2-humped Bactrian camelride in the Sand Dunes at Village Hunder.
